Notes:
Item 1, top: Pencil drawing with the hand-written caption, "mouth of the Shamony Creek Delaware" and dated 1862. There are faint sketches of a building on the tree-lined far bank, a sailboat and occupant (fishing?) on the water, and a pedestal or drinking fountain in the lower left foreground. Pencil drawing by an unudentified artist, 25.5 x 15.5 cm, 1862.
Item 2, bottom: Reproduction of an 1892 photograph, with the caption reading, "Philadelphia Harbor. Showing the islands now being removed by the United States. Major C. W. Raymond, Corps of Engineers U. S. Navy in charge." Originally one island, Windmill Island was split in two by a canal in 1838, creating Smith's Island. They were developed for recreational and commercial uses, but were eventually removed by dredging, beginning in 1891, to facilitate use of the harbor for the growing shipping industry on the Delaware River. Reproduction of an 1892 photograph by Frederick Gutekunst, 22 x 17.5 cm, c. 1900.
