Notes:
Item 1, entire page: Sensationalist article in a New York publication, giving grisly details about a teenage girl in Philadelphia being mauled by a Bengal tiger, of the famed Isaac Van Amburg menagerie. Although the girl was reckless in ignoring the protections and security provided before a performance at the Philadelphia Circus (at 10th & Callowhill Streets), much sympathy was expressed for her gravely serious injuries. Her family lived on Callowhill Street, and she was treated at Pennsylvania Hospital. Text and image appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, No. 169--Vol. II, measuring 24 x 28.5 cm, while the inset engraving measures 24 x 18 cm, published 2/26/1859.
