Item 1, left: Slip ballad (early sheet music) for the "Song of the Great Conflagration on the Morning of Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1865, Ninth Street, Near Federal."  The ballad was printed by A. W. Auner, Philadelphia. The lyrics were set to the tune of "The Wife's Dream."  This song was written to commemorate the tragic fire, which began in the storage yard of a coal oil plant, Blackburn & Co., at 9th & Washington Streets, and spread south on 9th Street as far as Federal Street.  It destroyed 50 homes on 9th Street, and killed 9 people, including one fireman.  Slip ballad, 12 x 21 cm, 1865.

Item 2, right:  Image of the aftermath of an electrical fire that gutted the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Saviour, at 19 S. 38th Street.  The outer walls survived, but the interior and roof were destroyed.  The building was built in 1889, by architect Charles M. Burns; he also spent four years rebuilding it after the fire, from 1902-1906.  What hadn't been destroyed by fire was crushed by the fallen roof.  The destruction of the chancel and roof are seen in this photograph.  A dozen fire companies, as well as neighbors and University of Pennsylvania students, responded to save whatever property they could.  Area churches and nearby Drexel Institute offered temporary use of their facitities to Reverend Dr. William B. Bodine, rector of the displaced congregation.  Reproduction of a photograph for an unidentified newpaper, 13 x 18.5 cm, 1902.
