Item 1, top:  Image of the Stone Prison, depicted as it appeared in 1728, located at the SW corner of 3rd & High (now Market) Streets.  It was occupied from 1723-1784.  Having then become overcrowded, the jail was demolished, and the prisoners were transferred to the new Walnut Street Jail at 6th & Walnut Streets in 1784.  The building in the foreground housed the debtors' jail; the building to the left housed the workhouse, for criminals.  Reproduction of a lithograph, for an unidentified publication, 17.5 x 12.5 cm, undated.

Item 2, bottom left:  Text from an article about the early history of jails and debtor's prisons in Philadelphia.  By 1695, it was deemed necessary to consider building permanent structures to house debtors and criminals. The Stone Prison, built in 1723, was the first such jail and debtor's prison, located at 3rd & High (now Market) Street.  Text of an article from an unidentified publication, 11.5 x 17.5 cm, undated.

Item 3, bottom right:  Caption, translated from the Italian, reads, "Two-story gallery of the Philadelphia Penitentiary."  This image shows an interior view of a two-tiered cell block inside the Eastern State Penitientiary, at 2027 Fairmount Avenue. It was designed in 1821 by architect John Haviland, and was in operation from 1829-1971. The original plan had single-story cell blocks, but it became necessary during construction to add a second level.  The design and philosophy for a "penitentiary", in contrast to the prevailing "congregate" design, was intended to be more humane; it drew international attention and was copied in many countries.  However, isolating inmates proved detrimental, and the philosophic ideas were deemed unsuccessful.  Engraving from an unidentified source, 12.5 x 16 cm, undated.
