Item 1, entire page: The full title is: "An accurate Sketch from nature, of the Exterior and Interior of the house No. 39, Nth. Fourth St., Philadelphia, where the atrocious murder of Mrs. Rademacher was committed on the night of the 23d, March 1848, her wounds, and exact position when discovered."
Hand-colored lithograph by an unattributed artist, showing an exterior view of an intruder at a 39 N. 4th Street residence, and interior views depicting the body of murder victim Catherine Rademacher and her severely-beaten husband Charles Rademacher, on March 23, 1848. According to the book Philadelphia On Stone (The Library Company of Philadelphia, 2012, pp. 181-184), Philadelphia lithographer Augustus Kollner was brother-in-law to Mrs. Rademacher, and as a key witness of the crime scene, he provided a sketch and testimony for the coroner's inquest. As the sketch appeared in newspapers, this may have provided inspiration for the unsigned lithograph, which took liberties in sensationalizing many details of the scene. Shoemaker Charles Langfelt was convicted and executed for the murder, although he never confessed to it. Lithograph, 23.5 x 32 cm, 1848.
