Item 1, entire page:  Text and illustration for the New York tabloid, The Daily Graphic, on March 23, 1876.  The caption reads, "Singular Occurrence at Reeve L. Knight & Son's Carpet Store, No. 1222 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Last Saturday."  The article describes an incident in Philadelphia that occurred on Saturday, March 18, 1876.  A man, newly-released early from a New Jersey prison, came to Philadelphia, purposefully broke the display windows of the fashionable Reeve L. Knight & Son carpet store, and immdeiately asked to be arrested.  The reporter posits whether the offender was insane or opportunistic, editorializing that prison offers criminals and debtors an attractive alternative to the demands of a life in society; and if so, should Pennsylvania or New Jersey bear the financial burden in this case.  Text and illustration for The Daily Graphic, 32 x 23.5 cm, 3/23/1876.  The image alone measures 17 x 22 cm, drawn by Philadelphia illustrator Frank Hamilton Taylor.
