Notes:

Item 1, top: Early image of the Moyamensing Prison complex, at 1400 E. Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia, c. 1835, before the addition of the Debtor's Wing. The prison building, comprised of three sections, was designed by architect Thomas Undick Walter, between 1832-1835, in the English Gothic style.  This setting is noticeably more rural than in the below image, only about five years apart.  Engraving by Nicholas Devereux, for an unidentified publication, 25 x 14 cm, ca. 1835.

Item 2, bottom:  Image of the Moyamensing Prison complex, at 1400 E. Passyunk Avenue, in South Philadelphia, after the addition of the Debtor's Wing, to the right.  The three sections of the main prison building, seen on the left of the photograph, were designed by architect Thomas Undick Walter, between 1832-1835, in the English Gothic style.  Walter added the separate Debtor's Wing in 1836, designed in the Egyptian Revival style.  Note the degree of development in the five years between these two views of the property. The prison operated from 1835-1963, and was demolished in 1968, but the facade of the Debtor's Wing is preserved at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.  Lithograph by J. T. Bowen, 19.5 x 16.5 cm, 1840.
