Item 1, top:   Image for a German-language publication, most likely the Philadelphia Demoktat.  The caption, roughly translated, describes the explosion at a cartridge factory in Philadelphia, at 10th & Reed Streets, on the morning of March 29, 1862.  The factory, owned by Professor Samuel Jackson, was a fireworks factory, converted to munitions production for the Union Army.  The explosion killed 18 and wounded more than 30 employees--men, women and children. This image was later published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, April 19, 1862, p. 369.  Engraving by (C.?) M. Johns, 24 x 17 cm, undated.

Item 2, center left: Image for a German-language publication, most likely the Philadelphia Demoktat, of the explosion of Professor Samuel Jackson's fireworks-turned-munitions factory.  Translated caption reads, "Ruins of the Cartridge Factory in Philadelphia after the Explosion on 29 March, 1862."  The explosion killed 18 and wounded more than 30 employees--men, women and children. Item 3, bottom left:  Caption reads, "House of Correction, Employment, and Reformation."  Image of Holmesburg Prison, at 8215 Torresdale Avenue.  It opened in 1896, due to overcrowding at Moyamensing Prison.  It closed in 1995.  Engraving by Van Ingen & Snyder, 13.5 x 5 cm, undated.

Item 4, bottom right:  Image of a "street station", which appears to be an early emergency call box.  Caption reads, "The Street Station, complete, with door open, showing alarm-box, with telephone, etc., and with lamp on top, taking place of iron lamp-post."  Engraving for an unidentified publication, 9.5 x 15 cm, undated.
