Item 1, left 2 1/4 columns: The 1900 newspaper article titled "Men and Things, " briefly mentions the historic 5-day ride by Tench Tilghman, aide-de-camp to George Washington, from Yorktown to Philadelphia, to deliver the news of the British surrender on October 19, 1781. The article continues with its main topic of interest, giving colorful details of the history of the Philadelphia watchmen, who were the earliest neighborhood patrolmen in Philadelphia. Text for a newspaper column, 11.5 x 32 cm, dated 9/17/1900.
Items 2, 3, 4, and 5: Following that lengthy article are four short items, dated 1880 and 1881, answering readers' questions about the Moyamensing Prison, floods and lightning strikes in Philadelphia, and duplicate articles about the hanging of James Moran in 1837.
