Item 1, entire page: Article with text and two photographs, for The Evening Bulletin, detailing the history of the Old Stone Prison (also called the High Street Prison), in use from 1720-1776. It occupied the SW corner of 3rd & High (now, Market) Streets. According to this 1940 article, some of the original walls of the old prison were still part of the 3-story building at this location. The top two floors were being removed by its owners, as the caption of the upper photograph states; the first floor and basement were to remain. What lay beneath the building were the remains of thick brick-walled colonial period vaults, seen in the lower photograph. But theories of their purpose ranged from prison dungeons to storerooms, depending on disparate sources of information, including some Pennsylvania Historical Society records, as well as unsubstantiated rumors. Text and two photographic reproductions for the Evening Bulletin article measure 26.7 x 32 cm; the upper image is 14.5 x 13.5 cm, and the lower image is 14.5 x 11.5 cm. December 5, 1940.
