Notes:
Item 1, top: Image of the Center City mansion of locomotive engineeer and inventor Joseph Harrison, Jr. In 1852, Harrison bought the entire block of 18th Street, between Walnut and Locust, facing Rittenhouse Square. The imposing residence was built by architectural firm Sloan & Stewart in the Italianate style, in 1856. The mansion was located at 221-225 S. 18th Street. The building was demolished in 1925. Reproduction of a photograph for an unidentified newspaper, 22.5 x 16 cm, 1907.
Item 2, bottom: Another image of the Joseph Harrison mansion. The caption reads, "This residence on the East Rittenhouse Square may become the future home of the Art Club." In fact, the building was demolished in 1925, and the Athletic Club of Philadelphia built a modern complex on the site. The Club moved to more modest accommodations in 1930, due to the Depression, but the building remains. Reproduction of a photograph for an unidentified newspaper, 11 x 11 cm, undated (probably 1923).
