Item 1, entire page: Text and image for a newspaper article regarding the last remaining residence on what was once considered a posh residential stretch on Chestnut Street, from Broad Street to the Delaware River. Title reads, "Famous Landmark Is Elbowed Aside." This mansion was located at 1118 Chestnut Street, built between 1820-1830, for Hartman Kuhn. After his death in 1860, the mansion was rented briefly as the first headquarters for the Union League of Philadelphia. It was then purchased ca. 1862 by locomotive manufacturer Matthias W. Baldwin, who enlarged and landscaped the property. The residence was demolished in 1900, making way for a lavish theater.
