Item 1, top: Image of a building at the SE corner of 5th & Chestnut Streets. The caption reads: "Gilbert Stuart's Studio and the Philadelphia Library, S.E. 5th and Chestnut St, 1795." While the image depicts buildings in 1795, as well as a horse-drawn carriage and a man on horseback, it was created c.1950, as a mixed-media artwork, by artist Henry B. McIntire, titled "Gilbert Stuart's House and the Philadelphia Library." Famed portrait painter Gilbert Stuart had his studio in this corner property from 1794-1796. He painted portraits of many significant historical figures, the most famous of which is the unfinished portrait of George Washington, which is on the US one-dollar bill. (Today, this corner property is the site of the Signers' Garden, dedicated to the signers of the US Constitution, and is part of the Independence National Historical Park.) The building seen to the right of Gilbert Stuart's studio is the Library Company of Philadelphia. Black-and-white reproduction of the McIntire artwork, for an unidentified publication, 16 x 12.5 cm, undated.
Item 2, bottom: Text describing some of the history of an early location of the Drexel Bank Building, located at the SE corner of 5th & Chestnut Streets, from 1885-1888. Previously, there had been a house (depicted in the above image), which was occupied from 1794-1796 by portraitist Gilbert Stuart. And the building seen to the right is the facade of the Library Company of Philadelphia, occupied from 1790-1884. Text from an unidentified publication, 15.5 x 12.5 cm, undated.
