Item 1, top:   Image from "Can You Recall This Bit of Old Philadelphia?," a regular feature of the Evening Public Ledger. Shown is a street scene on Chestnut Street, between 16th & 17th Streets, the day after a major snowstorm on February 14, 1899.  As described in the caption, the church shown became the Belgravia Hotel (three years later).  Also seen, one block closer, is the W. H. Harrison & Bro. building, manufacturers of iron products. Reproduction of a photograph for the Evening Public Ledger, 14 x 19 cm, c. 1925.

Item 2, bottom:  Image of the Dr. James Rush mansion, at 1914 Chestnut Street, as it was in the 1870s.  Rush, a son of Dr. Benjamin Rush (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), was a physician and later pursued scientific and literary interests.  He founded the Ridgway Library in honor of his wife.  Publisher J. B. Lippincott purchased the property in 1875, and extensively renovated it to become the Aldine Hotel in 1877.  Reproduction of a c. 1870 photograph for an unidentified newspaper, 16 x 14 cm, undated.
