Three views of the old John Wanamaker's Grand Depot, at different times.

Item 1, top left:  Corner view of the Wanamaker's Grand Depot, with the caption, "General View of Old Store from Chestnut Street."  Wanamaker's Grand Depot was built in 1876, becoming America's first modern department store.  After some alterations by architect Theophilus Parsons Chandler, Jr. in 1888, it appeared as it was in this image.  A new, much larger building replaced it on the same site in 1910; then in 1996, that building was taken over by Macy's.  Reproduction of a c. 1890 photograph for an unidentified newspaper, 11.5 x 12 cm, undated.

Item 2, top right:  Image of the Chestnut Street entrance to the old Wanamaker's Grand Depot, with the caption reading, "The Chestnut Street Front of the Old Wanamaker Store."  The awning, seen in this and the above Item 1, was replaced by a decorative iron marquee, seen in the item below, Item 3.  Reproduction of a c. 1890 photograph for an unidentified newspaper, 11.5 x 11.5 cm, undated.

Item 3, bottom: Image from "Can You Recall This Bit of Old Philadelphia?," a regular feature of the Evening Public Ledger.   Shown is the John Wanamaker department store, at 13th & Chestnut Streets.  Of note is the iron marquee, which was eventually removed to the Metropolitan Opera House (of Philadelphia). Reproduction of a c. 1900 photograph for the Evening Public Ledger, 15 x 13 cm, c. 1925.
