The ship was one of the historic fleet of passenger sailing-craft which plied for many years between the ports of Philadelphia and Liverpool, under the flag of the Copes. The vessels of this line had a great reputation for speed and safety. The only serious disaster suffered by their owners was that of the sinking of the Tuscarora, near Cadiz, Spain, on January 9th, 1873, with the loss of Captain Dunleavy and fourteen of his crew.
