Item pdcc01038, left [image dimensions 23.0 cm x 18.0 cm]:

Front and reverse advertising card for the clipper ship "Dreadnought" which sailed with the Coleman's California Line, one of the many clipper ship lines that sprung up in the 1850s in response to the growing need for transporation between the east coast ports, including Philadelphia, and the gold fields of California. Boastful text reads "This is the fastest and best Ship ever loaded for San Francisco." The Dreadnought was launched in 1853 in Newburyport, Mass. William Cushing, took the command in 1864, replacing her original captain, Samuels. It was the hard-driving Samuels who was responsible for the clipper ship's reputation for speed. The vessel was lost in 1864. The illustration, copyrighted 1918, Valentine's Manual, N.Y., shows the famed ship sailing under full sail, in a choppy sea.
