Halftone reproduction of street railroad station at 11th & Market Streets. Shows horsecars approaching the station, adjacent to the Mansion House which was a boarding house at the time.

Clipping from the Evening Public Ledger. Caption reads: Locomotives were left on the west side of Gray's Ferry in 1860 while mules and horses drew trains into this Pennsylvania station, pictured above, then located on the south side of Market st., below 11th. The old Mansion House is in the corner. It was about three miles from the "parking place" for locomotives to the station and it was reported that the animals "made the distance in a trot" in laudatory accounts of the rapid transit of those days. Engines, says one of the city's historians, were banned in the city limits in the early days. This was probably due to the fire danger from the sparks of wood used in the early locomotives.
