Item Info

Item No: pdcc00474
Title: Market Street Railroad Bridge.
Media Type: Scrapbooks
Source: Print and Picture Collection
Notes:

Depicts the railroad bridge spanning the Schuylkill River at Market Street, with factory chimneys spewing smoke in the background. A team of horses pull railroad cars from the bridge at left, while other cars on the opposite side stand motionless. Shows people fishing from boats and from the riverbank. In the foreground, at right, two children with their dogs play by the water's edge.

The stone piers were built in 1805 to carry a wooden covered bridge called the Schuylkill Permanent Bridge. The bridge was widened to accomodate a railroad in 1850 after it was destroyed by fire. The railroad bridge succumbed to the same fate in 1875.
