Item pdcc00525, top [image dimensions 9.0 cm x 12.0 cm]:

Postcard view of Market Street looking west from Fifth Street with City Hall in the far distance. Before the arrival of large department stores in the latter part of the Nineteenth century, the city's main commercial thoroughfare, Market Street (originally High Street), was lined with hundreds of specialty shops. In this view shop signs identify businesses trading in hardware, jewelry, seeds and bulbs, and suspenders. Note the buildings are still displaying the old numbering system, which, although was officially adopted in 1857, was slow to be accepted by the business community.

Notes:

Postcard view No. 254 National Art Views Co. N. Y. City.

Postcard view of Market Street looking west from 9th Street. Shows a busy commercial scene bustling with pedestrians and traffic.
