Item pdcc00521, top [image dimensions 17.0 cm x 21.0 cm]:

Depicts a large commercial building with signs on the facade identifying the names of businesses within. The sidewalk is lined with boxes, trunks, barrels and crates. Shows a man manouevering a crate; an elegantly dressed woman walking with a parasol; two men holding a conversation in an entranceway; two others stand talking beneath the covered sidewalk around the corner on 5th Street. The names of businesses include T. E.  Chapman, stationer and blank book manufacturer; E. Morris & Co., silk hat manufacturer; Henry C. Baird, publisher and bookseller; Haddock, Haseltine & Reed, boots, shoes caps and strawgoods; Field & Langstroth; Atwood & Co.; Levick Brothers & Co., boots, shoes and strawgoods; Rockhill & Co.; E. Morris, hat manufacturer. Note that the street numbers reflect the old system which was in common use until 1857.

Shows old residences and storefronts on a run-down block of Market Street west of 4th Street. Some buildings are decaying and many stores have been abandoned, their bare awning frames a telltale sign of dereliction. Remaining shop signs identify the businesses of E. S. Barber, wholesale dealers in wines and liquors; and Samuel L Wither.
