John Wanamaker's store at 13th & Market Streets looking east from Penn Square. The Grand Depot was opened in 1876 on the site formerly occupied by the Pennsylvania Railroad Freight Depot. The Moorish facade was designed to resemble the pavilions of the Centennial Exposition which was taking place in Fairmount Park of that year. The Grand Depot was taken down and replaced with the new store in 1905.
