Item pdcc00474, left [image dimensions 11.3 cm x 33.5 cm]:

Depicts the railroad bridge spanning the Schuylkill River at Market Street, with factory chimneys spewing smoke in the background. A team of horses pull railroad cars from the bridge at left, while other cars on the opposite side stand motionless. Shows people fishing from boats and from the riverbank. In the foreground, at right, two children with their dogs play by the water's edge.

The stone piers were built in 1805 to carry a wooden covered bridge called the Schuylkill Permanent Bridge. The bridge was widened to accomodate a railroad in 1850 after it was destroyed by fire. The railroad bridge succumbed to the same fate in 1875.

Item pdcc00475, top right [image dimensions 11.0 cm x 20.4 cm]:

Depicts ruins of Market Street Bridge, which spanned the Schuylkill River, following its destruction by fire. Two men on a boat pull debris across the river. Shows the damaged stone piers left standing in the water with remnants of the wooden structure between them and on the river's banks.

Built in 1805, the Schuylkill Permanent Bridge was the first covered bridge in America. After the fire in 1850 it was rebuilt and expanded to accomodate a railroad.
