Photograph of the south side of Market Street at 31st., taken in 1876, the year of the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. A sign board points in the direction of The West Chester & Philadelphia Railroad Station, which was opened to accomodate the overflow crowds attending the Exhibition. The building in the centre of the picture with the mansard roof is the West Philadelphia Friendly Inn, a temperance lodging house. Next door, at 3104, is a restaurant and saloon. Also on the block is Magee's Ale House, M. Donig Men's Furnishing Goods, and Deveney & Hitzeroth Ironworks. Horse-drawn carriages and carts line the curb.
