Drawn from a photograph taken in 1861, the view shows an imposing three and a half storey house with ivy covered gable end. Built for Edward Pennington, a member of a prominent family of merchants in colonial Philadelphia, in about 1760, the house stood on the corner of Race Streets and Crown Streets, and was one of the most respectable and substantial of its day.
