The photograph was taken at a time when the area on Arch Street was in decline and the house looked time-worn.  The house was built about 1740 and Betsy and her husband John Ross rented there between the years 1773 and 1786. After they moved, other businesses occupied the property until it was recognised as a national shrine and renovations were undertaken at the beginning of the twentieth century.
