The illustration shows well-dressed people entering the academy for an evening event. Top hats and fancy shawls are in evidence, and a uniformed doorman salutes a gentleman who has just passed beyond the threshold. A young couple in evening dress are climbing the few steps leading to the open doors of the building. A crowd of people fill the sidewalk opposite the brightly lit entrance to the theatre. Some can be seen alighting from hansom cabs lining the kerb. In the left foreground, an elderly gentleman and child stand hand-in-hand on the sidewalk looking on at the scene, which is illuminated by gas lanterns.
