A halftone reproduction of a photograph of the Academy of Natural Sciences before 1876 when extensive renovations were made.

The Academy was founded 1812 "for the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, and the advancement of useful learning." The oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere, the academy opened its doors to the public in 1828. Its collections of plants and animals from around the world grew so rapidly that the academy outgrew its building three times in sixty years.
