Depiction of the front of the United States Hotel, and adjacent buildings on Chestnut Street, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Built in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, the notable hotel was patronized by many celebrities, including Charles Dickens, who stayed at the hotel on his first visit to Philadelphia in 1842. The property was sold to the Philadelphia Bank in 1856, and upon the site a granite building was constructed in 1859.
