Item pdcc01085, top [image dimensions 17.0 cm x 22.2 cm]:

Depicts the facade of the Girard House hotel, built in 1852, after the designs of John McArthur, Jr., architect of City Hall and the Continental Hotel, which was located across the street from the Girard House. During the Civil War, the hotel was commandeered for us as a baracks for Union soldiers, as well as a sewing factory for their uniforms.

Depicts the Girard House hotel, built in 1852 after designs by John McArthur, Jr., architect of City Hall as well as the Continental Hotel, located just across the street. During the Civil War the hotel was commandeered for use as a sewing factory for uniforms and a baracks for Union soldiers. Shows people strolling on the sidewalks and a stationary horse-drawn carriage. A man on horseback rides along Chestnut Street.

"This view is of the intersection of Dock and Walnut Streets, where a collection of restaurants catered to longshoremen, traders and seamen alike."--OPEP, p. 23.

Buildings along street, among which are "Kitsch's Hotel" ; "A. Maegern" (with signs, "Restaurant a la carte" and "Imported beer") ; "St. David's Restaurant" ; "Peter Mettetal's Restaurant" ; "Geo. Williams Restaurant & Dining Saloon". People on street. On sidewalk is a street light and a fire hydrant.
