A winter view of Sweetbriar Mansion on the banks of the Schuylkill River. The Federal Style house was built in 1797 by Samuel Breck to escape the epidemics which plagued Philadelphia at the time. Schooled in France, Breck soon made Sweetbriar a gathering place of the French diplomatic corps. Among the many prominent visitors to his elegant country estate was his friend Marquis De Lafayette. Sadly, despite attempts to keep his family healthy, Breck's only daughter died of Typhoid fever in1828. Sweetbriar was sold ten years later.
