Notes:

Rural scene showing the house in which the artist Benjamin West was born in 1738.  Three trees tower above the house and in a foreground hollow three men stand near two horses harnessed to a covered wagon. The central panel is enclosed with a decorative border, and flanked on both sides by vignettes showing the tools and products of an artist's studio. On the left is shown an easel with an unfinished painting. A brush and palette lie on the floor. On the right a bust mounted on a pedestal is shown surrounded by drapery and a half-opened artist's portfolio.
